Chaos broke out yesterday as furious protesters came out in numbers, condemning what they describe as a vile, blasphemous attack on Islam by a controversial blogger, Md Suleman Ali from Sylhet — and shockingly, an Alim and member of the very group now demanding his death.
Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir led the charge, accusing Suleman Ali of crossing every red line. On his website, www.whatshoulddo.com, the blogger compared the Prophet of Islam to a paedophile and branded Quran teachers as child sexual abusers — claims that have ignited nationwide outrage.
The blogger, according to Islamic groups, claims hadith regarding the Prophet’s marriage to the young Aisha are false. He blames these narratives for child brides and sexual abuse of girls in Bangladesh’s religious schools. Even more incendiary, he alleges that while Islamic scripture condemns homosexuality, there is no direct condemnation , either in the Quran or from the Prophet, of sexual relations between boys and men, implying a disturbing tolerance that he links to widespread sexual abuse of boys in Madrasas.
Chhatrashibir and others have formally demanded the death or imprisonment of Suleman Ali, branding him a “kafir”.
