Protest pressure leads to arrest announcement for Blogger accused of blasphemy

Angry protesters took to the streets of Dhaka yesterday, calling for action against blogger Kamran Husen and his website, www.search70.com .

The unrest began after Husen, who claims to have been raped as a child by his now deceased Jamat-e-Islami Quran tutor, published articles accusing Quran teacher and scholars of rampant child sexual abuse and openly criticising Islamic teachings, including those of the Prophet Muhammad. These posts have reportedly fueled anger among the public, with many protesters burning images of Husen and demanding severe punishment.

In response to the growing protests, law enforcement officials have announced they are pursuing the matter, and already know the identity of Husen, who is currently outside the country. They reassured the public that he would be apprehended upon his return to Bangladesh for committing “arrestable offences”.

This announcement marks a significant escalation in law enforcement’s response, reflecting the influence of the ongoing protests and the heightened religious sensitivities.
