The Appellate Division has dismissed the case filed against BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas over allegations of irregularities in the allocation of plots to journalists.
The Appellate Division headed by Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury issued the order on Wednesday (May 21).
Senior lawyers Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal argued for Mirza Abbas in the court. They were assisted by Advocate Anisur Rahman Raihan Biswas.
In 2006, with the intervention of the then State Minister for Housing Alamgir Kabir, an organization called Dhaka Journalists Union Cooperative Society Limited was illegally allotted a seven-acre plot in Mirpur 8 of the capital. A case was filed against four people at Shahbagh Police Station on March 6, 2014 on this allegation. They are former State Minister Alamgir Kabir, National Housing Authority Member (Land and Property Management) Azharul Haque, National Housing Authority Cashier Md. Manusar Alam and Accounts Assistant Matiar Rahman.
On January 12, 2015, ACC Deputy Director Hamidul Hasan filed a charge sheet against five people, excluding Azharul Haque and including the names of Mirza Abbas and Bijon Kanti Sarkar. On October 20, 2017, Dhaka's Special Judge's Court-4 ordered the start of the trial by framing charges against three people, including Mirza Abbas.
