Staff Correspondent: Farmer Rezaul Sheikh, the elder son of Ozimuddin of Badlasan village in Nandigram upazila of Bogra, and his younger son Khokon Sheikh, two brothers, cultivate Bijli variety of chillies. Last Monday night, someone or something hostilely applied weed killer on one and a half bighas of chilli land. As a result, all the chilli plants on the one and a half bighas of land of farmers Rezaul and Khokon died and were destroyed.
And due to this, the two brothers have lost 12 lakh taka, Rezaul and Khokon said. It is known that Rezaul and Khokon of Badlasan village of Nandigram upazila of Bogra district cultivate various crops including chillies more or less every year. This time too, the two brothers cultivated Bijli variety of chillies on 6 bighas of land. In a few months, the plants have borne a lot of chillies. And after a week, the two brothers are dreaming of making lakhs of taka by harvesting chillies and selling them in the market. But someone or something has shattered that dream of Rezaul and Khokon.
Rezaul and Khokon said, we spent the whole day tending to the chilli field on Monday and went home from the chilli field in the evening. When we reached the field around 11 pm, we saw who or what had applied herbicide to our one and a half bigha of chilli field. As a result of the herbicide, all the chilli plants on our one and a half bigha of land were destroyed. With great difficulty, we took out a loan to cultivate 6 bigha of land and so far we have spent more than 3 lakh taka. We were very hopeful because of the chilli yield and good market price. And after a week, we will sell the chilli in the market and repay the loan. But who or what had used herbicide on our one and a half bigha of land in the dark of night to kill the plants. We want a fair trial.
