Israeli Chief Lt Gen Ayal Zamir has warned of the security cabinet meeting last night that the army is ‘in the smashing ground from the inside’.
‘I am raising 10 red flags in front of you,’ Jamir told the Minister of Channel 13, "I am raising 10 red flags in front of you. IDF now needs an Army Recruitment Act, Reserve Duty Act and a mandatory Army Service extension Act." Soon the IDF will not be able to do its regular work and the reserve system will not survive.’
In January, Zamir had issued such warnings, in January he sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials, warning that the army crisis could soon undermine the army's war preparations.
Since the Gaza Israeli attacks began on October 7, 2023, the country's army has repeatedly told lawmakers that they have a shortage of 12,000 troops due to war pressures and other military challenges.
In June 2024, Israel's Supreme Court ruled that Haredi Yeshiva had no legal basis for the students to be exempted from military service for decades, and since then, the ultra-conservative Jewish groups have been demanding laws to keep their communities out of the army. Today, about 80,000 Haredi men between the ages of 18 and 24 are considered to be eligible for military service, but they have not yet joined the army.
