Warning against providing a 'humanitarian corridor' to Myanmar's Rakhine state, the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party has said that Bangladesh should not become a shadow war zone for any superpower. However, it welcomed the process of upgrading the Chittagong Port to international standards. The leaders made these remarks at an urgent press conference on 'Chittagong Port and Humanitarian Corridor' at the central office in Bijoynagar in the capital on Thursday.
Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad said that Chittagong Port should become an international logistics hub with the touch of efficient management; where there will be the importance of time, use of environment and technology, transparency and above all accountability. He said that if decisions are made based on public interest and information technology, rather than backdoor deals like in the past, this port can be the foundation stone of the 'next Singapore of South Asia'.
Referring to the so-called 'humanitarian corridor', the party said, Myanmar is still not safe for the Rohingya. Creating a humanitarian corridor in this situation would make the country an unwitting part of a geopolitical conflict. This would not be acceptable in any way. The safe, sustainable and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya is the only acceptable solution.
Also present at the press conference were AB Party Senior Joint Convener Major (Retd) Abdul Wahab Minar, Joint General Secretaries Anwar Sadat Tutul, Altaf Hossain, Organizing Secretary Sayeed Noman, Dhaka Metropolitan North General Secretary Salim Khan, Student Wing Convener Mohammad Prince, among others.
