Boro paddy crops damaged by Kalbaishakhi storm in Nandigram; farmers are frustrated; agricultural officials are providing advice

In Nandigram upazila of Bogra, various crops including semi-ripe Boro paddy have been damaged due to Kalboishakhi storm and heavy rain. Fifty bighas of semi-ripe paddy have been uprooted. Farmers are worried about their crops due to such hostile weather conditions. It is learnt that Kalboishakhi storm and heavy rain hit Nandigram upazila in the early hours of Wednesday (April 20). And farmers are disappointed as paddy has fallen to the ground. However, the Upazila Agricultural Extension Department says that it will not have any impact on the crops. Meanwhile, the entire field is covered with golden paddy. Farmers are full of hope. And in a few days, the crop will be brought home. The Kalboishakhi storm and heavy rain are about to throw a dusting of dust at the farmers' hopes. Due to rain and wind, unripe, semi-ripe and ripe paddy plants in the field have fallen to the ground. Farmer Based of Ridhail village of the upazila said that he has cultivated miniket paddy on 6 bighas of land. There are still 4/5 days left to harvest the paddy. Due to the wind, the paddy plants have fallen to the ground. The land has accumulated water due to the storm and rain. There is a risk of crop failure and losses due to the falling paddy plants. Yakub Hossain, a farmer from Katham village of the upazila, said that he has cultivated Boro on 8 bighas of land. Out of this, four bighas of semi-ripe paddy has completely mixed with the soil. Nandigram Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Adnan Babu said that Boro paddy has fallen to the ground in some lands due to the rain and gusty winds. It is hoped that there will be no significant impact on the yield. We have always been providing all kinds of advice to the farmers, including draining water from the land.
