Jasmine Paolini ended a 40-year wait by winning the Italian Open in women's singles. She defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets to take home the women's singles title.
29-year-old Jasmine Paolini became the first Italian woman to win the tournament since Raffaella Rezzi in 1985. It is the fourth time an Italian has won the title since the tournament began in 1930.
Jasmine was emotional after winning the title. She said, "It doesn't feel real. It feels incredible to be standing with the trophy in my hand. I am so emotional."
"For Jasmine, this is more than a dream, I came here to watch the tournament as a child. Today, I am lifting the trophy myself, this is more than a dream."
Jasmine received a standing ovation from the home crowd at Rome's Foro Italico, where President Sergio Mattarella was also present. Jasmine defeated the American star 6-4, 6-2.
Jasmine Paolini surprised everyone at the French Open and Wimbledon last year. She was an unexpected finalist in both tournaments. She took 1 hour and 29 minutes to win the Italian Open.
